Queen Victoria. One of the most famous women in British history…
The only daughter of Edward, Duke of Kent, Alexandrina Victoria became the heir-apparent to the English throne upon her father’s death and ascended the throne at the age of eighteen, in 1837.
Reigning for over sixty years Victoria lent her name to a period of history that spanned nearly three-quarters of a century and saw marked change in England as well as around the world in industrial, cultural, political, scientific, and military matters.
As the ruler of the British Empire, Victoria played a role in the global domination of British interests in the nineteenth century.
Domestically Victoria formed Victorian era conceptions of the ideal roles of wife and mother.
Her marriage to Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, generally considered a love match, was notable for Victoria’s desire to be a wife to her husband, even as she wielded the reins of enormous power in her position as Queen.
Queen Victoria’s influence reached beyond the boundaries of British-controlled regions and into virtually every country in Europe due to the fact that many of her nine children married into royal or noble European families.
These alliances created deep-seated links between the major powers of the late nineteenth century, opening lines of communication even during times of war. At the time of her death, she had sixty-six direct descendants.
John Castell Hopkins’s account of Victoria’s life covers a wide range of material over the course of her six-decade reign, including her relationships with her beloved husband and many children and grandchildren, and the devastating premature loss of so many of her relations; as well as her political and diplomatic connections with Canada, Australia, South Africa, India, and the United States of America.
John Castell Hopkins (1854-1923) was born to British parents but grew up in Canada. He worked as a clerk, associate editor, and writer and produced around forty books and pamphlets in a three-decade span, including the first encyclopaedia on Canada. His suspicion of the United States and championing of British imperialism is apparent in much of his work.

There is a different feel to history books written in the past as opposed to those created for the current market. The facts are not tainted by the knowledge of today’s world, granting readers a chance to see a closer, and most times, cleaner version of what happened. John Castell Hopkins book on Queen Victoria is no exception. The author composed his book on the Queen soon after her long reign was over. One of the issues I had with the book was the absence of any footnotes, although there are numerous letters within the text accredited to different people, giving a personal flavor to the history. The other issue was that the author sometimes wrote as if readers knew the history of the people he would refer to in the book. It was as if folks in 19th century England would be the only readers of his work, and he must not have dreamed the book would be in print 125 years later.
I will caution prospective readers that the author’s text is extremely favorable to Queen Victoria. With such a long reign, one would expect there would be a blemish here or there, but you can’t tell that from Mr. Hopkins book. In fact, about the only negative words you will find are those people who expressed opinions that differed from the Queen’s.
Once the history reached 1887, the author decided to devote numerous chapters to other subjects (sometimes related, sometimes barely linked together). There were individual chapters about the Queen and India, South Africa, and Australasia; chapters included “The Queen At Home,” “Her Majesty’s Friends and Contemporaries,” and “The Prince of Wales.” Much of the information had either been covered in previous chapters, or would have made more sense to include in those chapters. Americans might find it interesting to read the chapter “The Queen and the United States,” which can be categorized as historically humorous when viewed under the light of today.
All in all, it is not the stuffy, hard-to-read text that you occasionally find in an older book. The author has a rolling style, and if the book slows at all, it is because of the unending inclusion of every little fact Mr. Hopkins could insert. You will receive a thorough picture of Queen Victoria in this book, although the author’s feel-good approach may compel you to read another book, just to achieve balance. Three stars.

Queen Victoria Her Life and Reign eBook John Castell Hopkins Reviews
Disjointed
Since I was born in the U.K. I love all the history this book was fantastic I loved it.
I guess this is my own fault for not properly reading the description....it's just too politically boring for my taste (
beautifully done.
Great historical information and I loved learning about her life.
Excellent movie, enjoyed it.
This was one of the most interesting non fiction books that I have read. A critique of what the book is about can’t do justice to Queen Victoria. You must read it for yourself.
